Salvage specialists are attempting to free 11 Hondurans who are trapped in a little artisanal gold mine 110km (70 miles) south of the capital, Tegucigalpa.

The diggers were cut off on Wednesday after an avalanche obstructed their passage close to the town of El Corpus.

Firefighters said they had reached three of the men. The destiny of the other eight was not known.

Artisanal mines are regular in Honduras however the absence of sufficient security implies lethal mishaps are not abnormal.

The artisanal mine is found in a territory inclined to avalanches and shakes.

The salvage laborers said their work was advancing "gradually and with trouble" on account of the danger of an alternate avalanche.
