Kei Nishikori dazed world number one Novak Djokovic at the US Open to turn into Japan's first Grand Slam singles finalist.

The tenth seed won 6-4 1-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 and will assume Marin Cilic for the title on Monday after the Croat stunned Roger Federer in straight sets.

Nishikori, 24, drilled by Michael Chang, reacted sublimely in the wake of losing the second set to seal his greatest win.

"It's simply an astonishing feeling, beating the most obvious player," said Nishikori.

Nishikori's record-breaking accomplishment

In the first place Japanese man to achieve the semi-finals at the US Championships since Ichiya Kumagae in 1918

The last Japanese man in a Grand Slam semi-last was Jiro Satoh at Wimbledon in 1933

The last Japanese player to achieve a Grand Slam quarter-last before Nishikori was Shuzo Matsuoka at Wimbledon 1995

In the ladies' diversion, Kimiko Date-Krumm arrived at the semi-finals at the Australian Open (1994), French Open (1995) and Wimbledon (1996)

Kazuko Sawamatsu arrived at the Wimbledon semi-finals in 1973

"I trust its enormous news in Japan. I feel the backing from Japan. It's 4 o'clock in the morning however I trust many individuals are viewing."

Nishikori had required 10 sets and more than eight hours to win his past two matches, yet delivered an astounding execution as temperatures hit 36c and stickiness took off.

"It was truly extreme conditions today, it felt a tiny bit overwhelming and sticky," he included. "I figure I like long matches."

Few expected Nishikori, making his Grand Slam semi-last presentation, to have the stamina to test Djokovic after his epic wins over Milos Raonic and Stan Wawrinka in past rounds.

The Japanese player greatly improved the situation begin however, breaking twice to take the first set against an abnormally level Djokovic, who beat Britain's Andy Murray in a tiring quarter-last.

BBC Sport tennis journalist Russell Fuller

"This was an uncommon twofold for the underdog. In the event that Cilic's triumph over Federer - who had hinted at feebleness in his limited quarter-last win - did not come as a complete shock, Nishikori's triumph opposed rationale. At the begin of the third set, the Japanese wore the look of a man who needed to strive for a calm rests. Rather, with fuel levels pursuing low two sequential five set matches, he went on the assault - thrillingly and splendidly - and Djokovic couldn't react in the way we are utilized to. Cilic, brimming with the conviction imparted in him by mentor Goran Ivanisevic, hit the ball neatly and influentially and - not at all like Monfils - gave Federer no opportunity to dispatch a rebound at the end of a life-changing day."

It was still no astonishment when the Serb, playing in his 24th significant semi-last, dashed during the time set in thirty minutes as Nishikori seemed to at last be hailing.

An emotional third diversion right on time in the third set demonstrated urgent, however, as Nishikori survived four break focuses and seven deuces to cling, bringing the swarm on side as they got behind the underdog.

Blazing strike and forehand champs had Djokovic reeling as Nishikori broke for 5-3, yet an apprehensive administration diversion took after and he twofold blamed when attempting to close out the set.

Once more, it created the impression that Djokovic would at long last accept control and power on to a fifth straight US last, yet the top seed kept on strugging and played a poor tie-break.

A wayward forehand on set point was his sixth unforced lapse in 11 focuses and the possibility of a significant stun got to be true when he then dropped serve at the begin of the fourth set.

The disappointed Serb shouted toward his mentor Boris Becker, while the German's previous on-court rival Chang held his clench hands as he willed on Nishikori in the inverse corner.

There was one more test for Nishikori to arrange at the same time, exactly as he had done throughout the span of three emotional matches, he played out of inconvenience from 0-40 to move 2-0 up, and Djokovic would not get an alternate shot.

An alternate singing strike return raised two match focuses and Djokovic's test finished with a tired forehand over the pattern.

"Other than that second set my amusement today was way off the mark to what I needed it to be," said Djokovic.

"A considerable measure of unforced slips, a ton of short balls. I simply wasn't myself."
